Simple tips for creating good study habits

Ida Melchert

It can often be difficult and feel overwhelming to start all the school assignments that need to be “plowed through” each week. The secret is to create good study habits and routines that you can then use in your daily life. This will make it easier for you to get started.

Organize your time

It’s not always easy to remember all the different tasks that need to be done. Here, it’s important that you organize your study time. Always start the week by writing a schedule for each day where you organize and plan when you will complete the tasks. This will help you manage everything you need to do in good time and will also prevent you from forgetting any tasks.

Study by hand

To more easily remember what you’re studying and reading, it can be very helpful to study by hand. We often learn more by writing by hand and remember what we study more easily that way. It’s good to take notes while reading so that you can conveniently refer back to them when, for example, you need to write an exam at the end of the course. Don’t forget to write down the page number so you can easily refer to what you're writing about.

Take breaks

We always need to take breaks while studying. Go for a walk and get some fresh air, or why not grab a cup of coffee. If we don’t take breaks, it will become harder for the brain to absorb all the information we’ve read. Instead, during the breaks, the brain can process all the information. One tip is to set a timer for, say, 30 minutes where you actively study, and then take a short break before starting the next 30-minute timer. Timers make it easier to remember to take breaks.

Get help from your classmates

It’s always rewarding to discuss school assignments with classmates. This will help you place the information in context and connect it to a memory. You’ll also be able to see the information from different perspectives and dimensions as you discuss the topic and hear other people's thoughts on the matter. For many, it’s also much more fun to study with someone else than to sit alone, even though it's also important to do so sometimes. Discussing assignments and reading with someone else can also be very helpful if you haven’t fully understood something.

Reward yourself

It often feels easier to study when you know you’ll get a reward afterward. This can provide motivation that will make you study more effectively to reach your goal faster. For example, save the new episode of your favorite show until after study time, and it will act as a carrot through all the study hours.
