Six tips for those applying for an internship

Ida Melchert

Securing an internship can be an important part of your education or career as a student. However, it can be difficult to know where and how to start your search. Here, we present five tips that can help you find an internship that aligns with your interests and goals. Take a look at the tips and get started on your internship search journey.

  1. Use career resources at your school

Book a session with your career center or academic advisor to get general tips and advice on internships. They provide guidance and often have concrete suggestions for workplaces you can contact. They usually have connections with businesses, government agencies, and organizations. Additionally, they may offer job portals or bulletin boards where employers post internship opportunities specifically for students. In addition to career centers, student unions often organize job fairs where you, as a student, can network and inquire about internships.

  1. Explore online platforms

You can find internships through job portals like LinkedIn and the Swedish Employment Agency (Arbetsförmedlingen), but since they aren't primarily aimed at students, it can be a bit tricky. This is one of the reasons why we at Framtidsverket created the student platform Virtual Career Days. Here, internship and job offers are listed specifically for students and recent graduates, whether you're studying or have studied at university or vocational school. You can filter the type of internship you're looking for, etc., and you can express interest in the opportunities directly through the platform. This makes it easy for companies to contact you to follow up on your application.

  1. Contact relevant companies directly

Many companies post about their internship programs or upcoming opportunities on social media, so be active and follow the companies you're interested in working for. Company websites also have a lot of information about internship opportunities. You can also send unsolicited applications to companies. Contact employers and explain why you want to intern with them, and be prepared to explain why you want to work at their specific company/organization.

  1. Network and leverage contacts

Tell your friends, family, and teachers that you're looking for an internship. They are likely to recommend you and may have valuable contacts. You can also attend industry-related events and fairs where professionals give you the chance to converse and show your interest in them. It's important to be open and engaged in their work to encourage them to offer you an internship.

  1. Tailor your CV and cover letter

For each application, you should tailor your CV and cover letter to highlight your relevant education and experience. It's important to show how your skills can contribute to their company. Review the company’s website and adjust your application according to their needs. By showing your commitment to the company, you increase your chances of being called for an interview. Focus on quality and avoid sending out large-scale generic applications.

  1. Follow up and be persistent

After sending your application, it’s important to follow up with the employer. Send a thank-you note expressing your interest and gratitude for the internship opportunity. If you’re called for an interview, make sure to prepare thoroughly by researching the company and being ready to answer interview questions. If you don’t receive a response, be persistent and don’t give up; keep applying and improve your application materials based on feedback you receive. It may take some time to get a response.
